The Ark Bunker calls “exile” “returning you to the surface.” I was the youngest security officer in the bunker, but after taking one too many glances at the gray film over a corpse's eyes, I was exiled to the surface too.
The bunker says the surface is full of radiation. That's a lie. There is no sun in the sky. It's an open eye. Anyone it watches develops translucent skin and glowing bones, then becomes an “Echo,” doomed to repeat the actions they performed in life.
I make a living disposing of corpses. After handling enough of them, I realized every corpse was telling me the same thing: the bunker's exile list was actually a list of “compatible subjects.” And at the very top was my father's name.
Before I start glowing all over, I have to shut off the sun.
