The orphan Wen Shuying inherits her late father's medicinal herb garden and carries the burden of an old injustice against her family. While treating patients at her street stall, she encounters Gu Xingjian, who bears the burden of an old case from the border. The two join forces to investigate and discover that local gentry have colluded with the Vice Minister of Revenue to skimp on border military supplies using inferior medicine and murder those who know the truth. Armed with remnants of evidence in the form of medicinal herbs, the pair travel between the countryside and the capital, evade multiple attempts on their lives, and gradually expose a massive corruption case involving medicinal supplies and stretching across the imperial court. Together, they seek justice for the dead.
