You think awakening is a gift from God.
You are wrong.
Xing Wu is a corpse collector. His job is to clean up the corpses of warriors after the beast tide, detect the residual Qi, register, bag and burn them. The job was dead-end and no one cared, but it didn't matter to him - he didn't "care" about this feature anyway. After a brain surgery at the age of nine, he never felt any emotion again.
Until one day, he discovered a set of data: the residual concentration of true energy after death of a warrior with a lover is three times that of a lone warrior.
He began to trace.
Every subway station is a wire. Every cell tower is a transmitter. The entire city is a huge petri dish, and all awakened people are batteries trapped inside. The Qi they have cultivated throughout their lives is not used to become stronger, but to be harvested.
The deeper the emotion, the mellower the quality, and the more valuable it is when harvested.
And the existence that created all of this is waiting at the highest point of the city, using a frequency that is inaudible to humans, blinking on and off like a heartbeat.
Xing Wu decided to go up and have a look.
But he wasn't there to save anyone. He just made a calculation: unless the consortium dies, it will be broken sooner or later. He chose not to break himself first.
