Fu Jinyan took Su Wan in for three years. He found her on a rooftop, paid for her to attend law school, gave her resources and connections, and nurtured her from a broken orphan into a legal rose who never lost in court. Everyone said she was his perfect caged songbird.

The day Jiang Ye barged into her life, he sat across from her at the opposing counsel's table, dressed in a sharp suit, the beauty mark at the corner of his eye tilted slightly upward. He bowed to her and silently mouthed words only the two of them could understand: Sister, I've been drawing you for three years. Ever since that night on the rooftop.

Late at night in the apartment, Fu Jinyan made soup for her in the kitchen. Reeking of alcohol, Jiang Ye leaned against the doorway and turned the little songbird ornament around. A bird should face the window.

Watching the two men face off through the peephole, she leisurely lit a mint cigarette.

On the anniversary of her father's death, Fu Jinyan forgot. Jiang Ye stood in the cemetery holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums, his coat draped over her shoulders. When Fu Jinyan arrived, he saw her wearing another man's clothes, standing shoulder to shoulder with him, as if they were one whole he could never enter again.

Later, someone asked her to choose.

She toyed with the silver key in her hand, the birdcage pendant Jiang Ye had given her, its door left open.

“Who told you,” she exhaled a puff of smoke, “that after a bird flies out of its cage, it has to find another one?”
