My husband's childhood sweetheart loved playing pranks.
After I got pregnant, she came over of her own accord, volunteering to take care of me.
She claimed she was just trying to cheer me up and keep me from getting postpartum depression.
Day after day, she found new ways to scare me.
She left me with nervous exhaustion and nearly caused me to miscarry several times.
But my husband always took her side, saying I was making a fuss over nothing.
"Xiaoxiao means well. Don't use your pregnancy as an excuse to be so petty."
Out of sight, out of mind. I simply checked into the hospital to protect my pregnancy.
I gave in again and again, but all it did was make them go too far.
One day, I returned from the hospital to pick something up. When I opened the door, I saw blood covering the rooms and walls.
She and my husband were lying on the floor, covered in blood, with knives in their chests.
Thinking something terrible had happened to them, I became so distraught that I started hemorrhaging on the spot.
I was rushed to the hospital, but they couldn't save me. In the end, both my baby and I died.
As I fell, I watched the two of them scramble to their feet and rush toward me.
"Xiaoxiao! Didn't you say her pregnancy was stable at this stage, and that we could prank her however we wanted?"
"If she dies, what will happen to my precious son?"
Only then did I realize this had been yet another prank aimed at me.
When I opened my eyes again, I heard my husband's delighted voice through the phone.
"Honey, Xiaoxiao says she wants to come take care of you. We have to thank her properly!"
I gave a cold laugh and immediately called my mother-in-law, who had heart disease.
"Mom, I have some good news. I'm pregnant!"
"But we're young and inexperienced, so we'll have to trouble you to come take care of me for a while."
