In 2026, the world seems perfectly ordinary to ordinary people.
But beyond what ordinary people can see, the monsters, mythical beasts, and other races recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas have never vanished. Over the past four thousand years, they have learned to hide in human society: some disguise themselves as people going to work, some hide in abandoned factories, and some work at convenience stores late at night.
An ancient organization maintains the balance between humans and monsters: the Demon Suppression Bureau. Its lineage dates back to the era when Yu the Great tamed the floods. Its original mission was to “quell the monster calamities across the Nine Provinces after controlling the floods.” Over three thousand years, the bureau has survived under various names: the Demon Affairs Office during the Han dynasty, part of the Court of Judicial Review during the Tang dynasty, and the Embroidered Uniform Guard’s Demon Suppression Thousand-Household Office under the Ming. Today, it operates within the system under the cover of the Special Operations Division of the Urban Management Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau. Only seven official members remain nationwide.
