The story takes place in a fictional second-tier provincial capital city called "Jiangzhou City". Jiangzhou City has a population of eight million. It has a developed economy but obvious class differentiation. High-rise buildings and old urban villages coexist, and behind the bustling business district are hidden alleys. For the protagonist Lin Mo, this city was originally boring and mediocre - until everything changed.
All operating rules in the surface world are the same as ordinary reality: office workers clock in, landlords increase rents, companies lay off employees, and takeaways are late. These everyday details are the foundation for the story's sense of reality and immersion.
The origin of the Awakened Ones remains a mystery. Starting about thirty years ago, people all over the world suddenly gained abilities beyond ordinary people. No one knows the cause. The scientific community classifies it as a "gene mutation with extremely low probability", but there is an older saying in the dark side world - some kind of "foreign consciousness" is infiltrating the world.

It is estimated that there are approximately 200-300 awakened people in Jiangzhou City. The abilities of the vast majority of awakened people are weak and unstable, and only a handful of them can achieve enough strength to change the situation.
