One second before her death, Shi Yao still thought she was the chosen heroine.
Her parents died and left her a fortune worth tens of millions. All three of her ex-boyfriends fit the leading-man mold, and she was both the campus belle and a top student. Wasn’t this the perfect leading-lady script?
Then she tried to save a child.
...Splat. A delivery rider ran her over and killed her.
Luckily, a System called Xiao Shi came to her rescue, sending her to stay in the beast world for a few years. It even thoughtfully gave her the body of a snake beastman: an inland taipan with five rings of beast markings, immune to all poisons, and equipped with a Ruger SR22 and eight thousand rounds of ammunition...
Shi Yao: Fine. I’ll treat it as a vacation in another world.
Picking mushrooms, hunting pheasants, growing vegetables and flowers. Life is wonderful.
Until she finds a many-banded krait by the river, its lower half mangled and barely clinging to life.
Snake meat is nutritious, and snake gall improves eyesight. Shi Yao scoops it up and takes it home, drooling.
But while she’s cleaning its wounds, the “ordinary snake” suddenly opens its eyes.
Its silvery-gray vertical pupils hold a plea that no beast should have...
Shi Yao’s hand freezes in midair.
Looking down at the dying many-banded krait beneath her fingertips, Shi Yao suddenly realizes: this isn’t just a snake she picked up. It’s trouble.
Later, she discovers that if you take care of trouble long enough, it becomes family.
