In the Great Xuan Dynasty, the energy flowing through heaven and earth is known as “spiritual essence,” and everything possesses it. But spiritual essence is not eternal: it dries up once every thousand years, then begins a new cycle. The next depletion is fast approaching.
Yun Gui, a youth from the southern frontier, bears the rare “Mixed Spirit Constitution.” He was raised from childhood by an old cultivator named Sui Yan and relies on the “Spirit-Sealing Cuff” on his wrist to suppress his constitution. Before dying, Sui Yan leaves him a letter pointing to “someone surnamed Liu” in the imperial capital. Seeking his birth parents, Yun Gui ventures into the capital, but when his constitution is exposed, the Tianshu Pavilion hunts him down.
While fleeing, he meets four companions who are likewise rejected by the world: Qing Yu, a half-blood demon girl; Jue Ming, a silent Buddhist martial monk; Yue Nu, an amnesiac half-demon from the demonic sect; and Tong He, a mechanical genius looked down on by cultivators. Together, the five form a ragtag team accepted by no faction.
With spiritual essence on the verge of depletion, the Tianshu Pavilion launches its “Cleansing Plan,” while the Demon King seizes the opportunity to ignite a war between humans and demons. In the final battle in the Divine Corpse Mountains, Yun Gui removes the Spirit-Sealing Cuff and unleashes his mixed spirit, reshaping the laws governing the cycle of spiritual essence and changing it from something “supplied to a select few” into something “everyone can perceive.”
