The Republic's Top Spy: Infiltrating Japanese Military Headquarters

[Hardcore espionage] [Triple identity] [No rebirth, no System] [A tribute to the pioneers of the covert front]

In 1935, Wei Hansheng graduates from the Military Statistics Bureau’s Nanjing Station training program at the top of his class, arriving at a hidden crossroads in his life.

Because he bears an uncanny resemblance to Kono Jiro, a Japanese aristocratic officer, he is selected for the top-secret “Civet Cat Plan”: assume the identity of a dead man and infiltrate the heart of Japanese military intelligence.

No one knows that this promising young agent, in whom Dai Li has placed such high hopes, is already an underground Communist Party member operating within the Military Statistics Bureau.

In Nanjing and Shanghai, before the full-scale War of Resistance breaks out, Wei Hansheng relies on his exceptional powers of observation and meticulous reasoning to crack major cases one after another, including a consulate leak, the theft of a river defense map, and a spy inside an arms factory. He captures dozens of Japanese agents in hiding and quickly becomes the Military Statistics Bureau’s celebrated “number one spy hunter.”

The guns fall silent in the Battle of Shanghai, and Shanghai becomes an isolated island.

He chooses to stay behind and play three roles at once.

In public, he is the leader of a Military Statistics Bureau cell operating undercover. In the Japanese army camp, he is Colonel Kono. But his true identity is that of a Red underground operative.

With a blade at his throat and three identities to uphold, he spends his life writing the most legendary chapter in the history of espionage during the Republic of China era.
