While sorting stone rubbings, Clementine is swept into a temporal tunnel and arrives in a Western Sentinel-and-Guide world. Mutated creatures are rampant here, and civilization has collapsed. The surviving humans have evolved into Sentinels and Guides, yet they are still steadily losing ground to the contamination zones of the Four Fiends.
While others rely on guns and ammunition to survive, she relies on the ancient Classic of Mountains and Seas. She knows every monster's origins and weaknesses by heart. She discovers that the contamination zones are living "rules horror" scenarios. As long as she "names them correctly" and uses page after page of annotations to tear open a breach, the monsters' "indescribable" power will crumble: Taotie's stomach, Qiongqi's arena, Taowu's stone maze, and Hundun's fog.
The White Tower decides to launch a full-scale assault from all four directions. But she realizes this will drive the Four Fiends into a corner and tear open the rift connecting to the East all over again. She breaks through the illusions and loudly recites the names and origins of the Four Fiends in Chinese. The moment they hear their true names, their entire power systems collapse. Their strength comes from the "unknown," but now their home has been raided. She will have to deal with four lost wanderers.
