On the first day the supernatural horror descended, eight-year-old Que Suihe became the only “unclaimed child” in the whole place.
The bus rules said that unclaimed children were not allowed to leave seat thirteen.
Everyone was convinced she was a trap left behind by the instance. Only Suihe knew she had returned from the ruins seventeen years in the future. In the future she came from, humanity had never won again after that night.
She could see crayon notes on the backs of the rules, and she had a blank “Parent Contact Book” in her hands.
When a fire and rescue team captain shielded her from corruption, Suihe opened the contact book and asked softly:
“Uncle, would you be my parent?”
When he signed his name, the rule that had meant certain death became: [Parents must take children off the bus.]
From then on, while others entered instances searching for a way to survive, Suihe first looked for parents who could sign the book. Humans, uncanny beings, and strange children from the instances gradually appeared in her contact book.
