In 1978, Lugang, a small coastal town in southern China, was on the eve of reform and opening up. On one side, this city has the background of a fishing village that has been fishing for generations, and on the other side, it has an old order that is about to be washed away by the tide of the times. The story begins in the summer of 1976, when a bizarre disappearance tore through the small town's calm exterior - Shen Huaiyuan, a senior engineer at Lugang Shipyard, disappeared on the night he completed an important design drawing. The only clue left behind was a tide table that was torn in half.
Three years later, in the spring of 1979, Shen Huaiyuan's daughter Shen Nian returned from vacation at the provincial capital university and decided to re-investigate her father's disappearance. She found that everyone who was questioned back then - her mother, her father's colleagues, neighbors, the boat boss at the fishing port - all gave a "reasonable" explanation as if they had discussed it. But the more reasonable it is, the more unsettling it is.
As the investigation deepened, Shen Nian discovered that his father's disappearance was closely linked to an old case that had been deliberately buried - a fire in the fishing port late at night in 1968 burned three fishing boats and killed two people. The official conclusion was that "the fire was caused by the fishermen's careless operation." But the night the fire occurred, the tide table marked three words: "Unsuitable."
