Synopsis

The Regent could keep the court officials in line, but he couldn't control his own sickly, unruly son.

Xiao Chenhan, the Regent feared by everyone in the Great Zhou Dynasty, had only stumbled twice in his life.

The first time was when he fell asleep after drinking. The second was when he discovered he had a son.

The boy, Xiao Qi'an, was frail and sickly, but had a temper to match.

At one month old, he cried so loudly he nearly lifted the roof off the palace hall. At three months, he learned to roll over and crawled all over the warm pavilion. At five months, he pulled himself up against the wall and immediately started causing trouble.

As soon as court let out, the Regent became a nursemaid, chasing after his son with medicine, stopping him from falling, and using his jade crown ribbons to coax him out of a tantrum.

The young emperor, Xiao Mujin, was no better.

This exalted Son of Heaven was grabbed by the collar by the boy, who went "Ah, ah" to be picked up. If he couldn't get rice paste into the boy's mouth, he got smacked. When his son kicked him awake in the middle of the night, he still had to smile and soothe him: "Qi'an, be good. Daddy's here."

Holding this sickly, noisy little bundle, the two men exchanged a look.

"We've spoiled him."

"So what do we do?"

"...Keep spoiling him."
