On the third day of the apocalypse, Chongqing fell.
Lin Bei, a veteran, is trapped in a noodle shop in Shapingba. Outside, infected crowd the streets. All he has is a rolling pin and a boning knife. While everyone else flees aboveground, he chooses to go down: two thousand kilometers of civil defense tunnels beneath Chongqing once sheltered people from bombing during the war against Japan and hid an arms factory during the Third Front construction campaign. Now they have become the last refuge in the apocalypse.
The generators roar back to life, the arms factory resumes production, and lights switch on one by one in the air-raid shelters. Survivors arrive from every corner, and under Lin Bei's command, they become an army. But something is watching them from deep within the city. It isn't an ordinary infected, but one that is learning to think.
The Mountain City becomes a fortress, and cooking smoke rises above the ruins.
This is the story of ordinary people shouldering the burden of civilization in a desperate world. No System, no supernatural powers. Only bodies covered in scars and backs that will not break.
