The story takes place in the era of the ancient Classic of Mountains and Seas, at the dawn of the primeval world, earlier than the Investiture of the Gods and the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. The pillar of heaven has not yet fallen, and the separation of Heaven and Earth has not yet taken place. Gods, humans, demons, and witches live side by side in a world rich in spiritual energy but overrun by vicious beasts.
