I Cultivate Among Folk Taboos

The day my grandfather died, the paper effigies in his shop moved on their own.

I opened the ancient book he left behind. It contained just one sentence:

“Taboos aren't superstition. They're the way to stay alive.”

From then on, I followed the rules. The living don't dare cross me, and the dead line up to ask for my help.

Burning joss money = paying protection money to the underworld. Setting off firecrackers = using sound waves to ward off evil. Corpse-driving = moving things with the power of qi...

You call this feudal superstition?

I call it cultivation.
