Lin Du graduated from a junior college with a degree in funeral services.
The day he was assigned to report to the funeral home, everyone looked at him as if he were already dead.
“Young man, this line of work isn't easy,” the old hand said meaningfully.
Lin Du paid him no mind. Until his first night on the job, when he was alone on the night shift and heard a rhythmic knocking from the morgue.
Three long knocks, two short ones.
He went to body locker No. 3 and saw the fingers of the woman who had just arrived that day twitching.
Then a translucent panel appeared out of thin air before his eyes:
[Night Watch System activated]
[Deceased: Su Wan, 28, cause of death: car accident]
[Final wish: Find her seven-year-old daughter]
[Taboo: You must not let anyone know you're helping a dead person]
[Completion reward: +3 years of life, one random skill]
[Failure penalty: Lifespan reduced to zero, dragged into the underworld]
Only then did Lin Du understand that his grandfather hadn't been crazy all those years ago. He had seen something he shouldn't have.
And on the funeral home's third basement floor, dozens of souls who had refused to leave had been locked away for decades.
Now it was his turn.
Good book, come read it
