The 1970s: The Timid Brother-in-Law Fights Back, and the Whole Village Panics

“Two pounds of moldy cornmeal for your fourteen-year-old sister-in-law. Otherwise, that sickly wife of yours will starve to death today!”

When Lu Yuan, a top agricultural science expert, opened his eyes, he had transmigrated to the snowy wilderness of Northeast China in 1974. He had become a famous good-for-nothing live-in son-in-law, and from the start he had to face a local bully who’d come to snatch a girl!

Seeing his beautiful wife gravely ill and his eight younger sisters-in-law starved to the bone, Lu Yuan flew into a rage! Armed with a mind full of modern survival knowledge, he took down the village bully in one move. Then he smashed through the ice, set up a homemade “bewildering trap,” and hauled in a hundred pounds of river fish, leaving the whole village stunned!

The village officials want to cut off my food rations? I’ll head into the mountains alone, kill a black bear for its gallbladder, and sell it for a fortune. I’ll feast on white rice and braised pork every meal and make the whole brigade drool!
