Lin Xiangbei returns to 1993 and becomes a temporary worker at an antiques shop. He thinks he’ll spend the rest of his life scraping by repairing broken pots, until he discovers that the old grandfather clock in his rented room strikes thirteen times every night… On the thirteenth chime, something in the room always comes to life. Scissors fly, thermoses spray, and bedsheets roll themselves into balls. The pretty widow from the tailor shop next door pounds on his door in tears. “My sewing machine keeps stitching shrouds, and whoever they’re for dies!” Lin Xiangbei pulls out a screwdriver. “Don’t panic. I’m a professional at fixing this sort of thing.” Later, old objects all over the city start acting strangely. A bespectacled graduate student from the archaeological institute comes to see him and holds out a Western Han bronze mirror. “Would you dare repair this?” Lin Xiangbei looks at his reflection. The person in the mirror smiles at him. He doesn’t smile back.
