In the 371st year of the Dayin era, Fudeng Village on the northern frontier holds a wedding feast.
A red bridal sedan enters the village, but the bride never gets out.
At midnight, every light in the village goes out at once.
When Shen Zhao wakes again, more than seven hundred villagers have vanished without a trace. All that remains in the streets are tables of food and wine, still warm, and seventy-two black coffins unlike any he has ever seen.
Most unsettling of all, a new tombstone has appeared in the desolate graves behind the village.
It bears the inscription:
The Grave of Shen Zhao.
Born eighteen years ago. Died eighteen years ago.
That very night, a mysterious woman who calls herself the “Lamplighter” finds him and tells him:
“You are not someone who crawled out of a grave.”
“You are something the world forgot, then remembered again.”
To find his missing family and uncover the truth of his own origins, Shen Zhao leaves Fudeng Village.
A stone Buddha that weeps, a rainy alley no one can ever escape, an ancient tower that gains another floor at night, a merchant caravan with no shadows, an old temple sunk beneath a lake that rings its bell every year…
One eerie mystery after another unfolds.
And behind every case is the same mark:
A broken moon chained in iron.
Then Shen Zhao discovers that the moon in the sky was not naturally broken.
Three hundred years ago, someone cut away half the moon and erased a part of the entire world’s memory.
Now, that forgotten history is awakening.
And Shen Zhao is the final key to unlocking it.
The writing is very solid and the plot arrangement is compact.
The plot has ups and downs and is worth reading!
