In Search of Two Shadows

A fog-shrouded old Shanghai, two shadows moving side by side.

In the turbulent undercurrents of Republican-era Shanghai, one bizarre murder case after another comes to light: an arson mystery involving a red opera costume, a murder at a fire scene staged to fake an escape, a reversed Death tarot card at a locked-room murder... The quick-witted, easygoing Chen Xing and the composed, reserved Shen Zhansheng make a habit of solving cases together. Side by side, they roam the streets and alleys of old Shanghai, unraveling schemes and probing the human heart.

Five years ago, the Shen family was massacred, and the case is riddled with unanswered questions. Hidden forces keep obstructing them, silencing witnesses at every turn. As the two pick apart a string of crimes, they solve strange cases from the streets while digging into an old blood feud. The murders lay bare the brutal joys and sorrows of the underclass, while conspiracies entangle the interests and calculations of all sides. These partners, so different yet complementary, seek the truth through the fog and support each other through danger. One unsolved case after another links into a larger story, exposing the crimes and sorrows hidden beneath the glittering surface of the old era and deep in the heart of its streets.
