Gray was the only thing she recognized when she first arrived in Tokyo. The sky was gray, the leaves were gray, and even her shadow on the ground was just a faint patch of darkness.

Later, she stepped into a forest. An owl watched in silence from a branch. A cat emerged from the bushes, its tail brushing her ankle. A fox paused by the stream and gently touched the back of her hand with its nose. A white bird flew over the treetops. A little sparrow hopped onto her shoulder and pecked her earlobe, as if to say: Come on.

She followed them along a path strewn with pine needles and crossing streams, until they reached an open stretch of water. The fox nudged a seed into the water with its paw. The moment it sank, a winter jasmine flower poked its head above the surface, tender yellow, like a little patch of sunlight crushed between fingers.

“Look, it's a spring flower.” The sparrow circled it in flight, the cat raised its tail, the fox sat on the bank, and even the owl gave a gentle flap of its wings.

Xu Zhi crouched down and touched a petal with her fingertip. It was damp, soft, and trembling faintly.

“It's been so long,”

she whispered, the corners of her lips curving into the faintest of smiles.

“I got my wish, too.”

The wind blew across the water. At last, she understood: the letter had no address and wasn't hidden anywhere.

It had been written into the wind, the flowers, and the spring, and into the hearts of everyone who had ever touched her gently. She simply had to walk this road first before she could see it.
