"Reviewing the Past 1942" is an investigative novella by writer Liu Zhenyun, which tells a story about hunger. In 1942, China's Anti-Japanese War was in a strategic stalemate. There was a severe drought in Henan, and 30 million people left their homes to escape famine in Shaanxi. "I" relived that period of history, interviewed "my grandmother" and "my uncle Peanut", followed their memories, and recorded the disaster that had almost been forgotten by this nation.
After the novel was published, Wang Shuo recommended Feng Xiaogang to make a movie several times. However, from the novel to the movie, the project was approved, rejected, revised, and then approved again... After nineteen years of hardship, "1942" was finally released. In the script, Liu Zhenyun uses the escape route of the disaster victims such as landlord Lao Fan, long-term worker Shuan Zhu, tenant Xianlu and his wife Huazhi's family as the main line, with the mediation of the American "Time" reporter Bai Xiude and others, and the dire situation of the Chiang Kai-shek National Government as the sub-line. It reproduces the survival attitude of our nation during the natural disaster in Henan in a more three-dimensional and vivid way than the novel.
Reader comments
After reading the script, a lot was deleted from the movie. Henan has suffered so many disasters, but it is still a province with a large population. I admire the ingenuity of Henan people.
Read this book, learn about history, feel heavy, and understand the happiness of living in the present!
True portrayal, objective facts
Individuals should be pragmatic; everyone should be pragmatic
It truly tells the story of the suffering of 1942
History always happens inadvertently, and only by personal experience can we truly empathize!
