Shen Shuyan, a failed scholar, picked up a bluestone on the river beach. On a spring night, the stone cracked open, and a child who couldn't remember anything came out of it. She cannot speak or walk, but she remembers the sound of water, the direction of the wind, and the call of the mountains. She is not a human being, she is learning to be a human being. This is a story about a stone turning into a human and finding a home in the world - slow, gentle, like spring growing in the cracks of the stone.
