Sunlight fell across her face, reflecting two tiny golden specks in her pupils. She said, "I wouldn't go out of my way to help a friend without them asking, like I do now."
"If they need my help, they can ask me themselves. They can tell me what they can offer and what their promises are worth."

"I haven't treated you that way, have I?"
She tilted her head, as though she could see through the veil he had never dared to lift in his heart. "Can you still not see that you're one of a kind to me?"
"I never planned to quit school," he explained.
As he watched her walk away, golden light draped over the shoulders of her black trench coat. Like a magnet, it drew him after her, until he was following close behind.
"Good. As long as you haven't quit. If you give up, I'll give up on you too."

To help him escape his pain, she had even tied her own likes and dislikes to it, making him fear the consequences of giving up and ensuring he would never abandon that "road to the heavens."
He smiled too, his eyes curving into crescents. The tear tracks still clinging to his lower lashes shimmered into fine streaks of light.
"Miss, being your little cat makes me so happy."
Can I be your little cat for the rest of my life?
