The Edict of Spring's Departure

The day I exchanged betrothal letters with Lu Lingfeng, Bai Ruowei, the woman he had rescued during his northern campaign three years earlier, was suddenly brought to the capital.

He sent word that she had once taken an arrow for him, and her old wound had flared up again. He had to care for her himself, so the engagement banquet would have to be put on hold.

The news arrived while the guests were still gathered in the hall. My mother’s face turned pale at once.

I gazed at the two betrothal letters lying side by side on the table. After a long while, I gave a soft laugh and said, “Then let’s put them away for now.”
