Midsummer, sunshine, cicadas singing, a mad dash: youth in full bloom, and a boy who refuses to be tamed.
A lovesick girl, Shu Mian, has been secretly in love with He Jinyao for three years. He is fearless, unrestrained, and arrogant, and he doesn’t know she exists. She never dared to hope for anything, but a letter of comfort reached the softest place in the boy’s heart.
Three years is a time that can tug at the heartstrings. It can quiet the things that once surged and stir up what once seemed ordinary. After transferring schools again, Shu Mian finally meets the person she has yearned for. He is as wild and unruly as ever, but the boy who usually watches from the sidelines repeatedly steps in to help her. Shu Mian thinks that “where there’s a will, there’s a way,” only to discover in the end that all his kindness was simply gratitude for that letter from years ago. Their romance, which had never even been made public, ends before it can begin.
In a private room, Wang Zan makes a grand confession, prompting their classmates to whoop and tease them. Under everyone’s gaze, Shu Mian flushes bright red and stays silent, trying to figure out how to turn him down. Suddenly, a figure appears from the corner. He Jinyao strides over, leans in, and shields her behind him. His brows lift arrogantly as he fixes his gaze on the culprit making Shu Mian uncomfortable. “Don’t even think about going after her.”
Everyone looks at one another in confusion. Wang Zan also wonders why He Jinyao, who usually minds his own business, has suddenly decided to meddle.
He Jinyao takes Shu Mian by the hand and leads her out, declaring as they go, “She’s mine.”
Shu Mian is still trying to process what’s happening. The warmth of their joined hands seeps into her heart, bit by bit. “He Jinyao, what are you doing?”
He tightens his grip, a smile spreading in his eyes. “Didn’t someone say I didn’t know how to cherish what I had? So now I’m going to hold tight to my whole world.”
