The story follows Gu Changyuan, the deposed crown prince of the Great Qi Dynasty. Poisoned amid palace intrigue, he is reborn at the point before everything began. He unexpectedly awakens a mysterious bloodline and obtains The Strange Tales of Mountains and Seas, an ancient text that lets him communicate with, summon, and even combine the mythical beasts of The Classic of Mountains and Seas. With this golden finger, he keeps a low profile and grows stronger amid the perils of the struggle for imperial power, secretly bringing powerful beasts under his control and building his own “Beast Legion.” While studying at Jixia Academy, he makes allies, sees through conspiracies, and strikes back at the brothers and powerful ministers who persecuted him. He also meets Su Wanqing, a mysterious woman with a special mission and a gift for taming beasts. From mutual suspicion, the two come to work side by side, exploring the lost secret realms of mountains and seas scattered across the land. As his power grows and the truth gradually emerges, Gu Changyuan discovers that his bloodline is connected to the “Beast-Taming Divine Deity” of ancient mythology, and that the calamity sweeping across the world is far more than a simple struggle for imperial power... He will command countless mythical beasts, smash every obstacle in his path, and uncover the ultimate secrets of his origins and his era.
