Qin Tianheng has just been promoted to deputy commander of the Imperial Guard for his military achievements on the northern frontier and transferred to the capital when he is ordered to join his superior in confiscating Grand Tutor Wei Guang's estate. Wei Guang has been framed for involvement in the Crown Prince's factional struggle, and his entire household is under investigation. While searching a remote courtyard, Qin Tianheng finds Wei Nanxing, a concubine-born daughter, hiding in a woodshed and trying to escape. He initially intends to turn her over as a “remnant of the treasonous family,” but is drawn to her distinctive scent.
