In 1938, Peiping fell and Tianjin was in crisis. The war forced teachers and students in North China to leave their homes and embark on an uncertain road.
Some teachers and students from Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Nankai University formed the "Hunan, Guizhou, and Yunnan Tour Group", which started from Changsha and traveled through Xiangxi and Guizhou on foot to Kunming. This was no ordinary hike - a 2,600-mile mountain road that spanned two provinces and one region, passing through dense forests inhabited by bandits and miasma-filled valleys, and it had to be traveled day and night under the shadow of Japanese bombings.
This is a journey about faith and expedition, youth and suffering, mountains and rivers and people's hearts. When this group of teachers and students finally arrived in Kunming to form the Southwest Associated University, everyone was no longer the same person they were when they set out. That sweat-soaked road connects broken mountains and rivers with an unknown future.
