In the early years of the Republic of China, Shandong girl Ju Xiulan (the grandma in the story) traveled to the Northeast with her family through Guandong. She is not tall but has extraordinary agility. She walks through thousands of mountains and rivers with her small feet, and smokes all the vicissitudes of the world with a big pipe.
The story begins with her experiences in her hometown in Shandong when she was a girl, to her difficult journey with her parents to Guandong, and then to taking root in a northeastern village, getting married, and having children. The main plot revolves around her legendary experience of standing up for danger again and again - the most classic scene is when she was returning from the market with her uncle in the twelfth lunar month, and was robbed by bandits.
