In my third year delivering takeout, I received a text from an unknown number: “Stay off Renmin Road.”

I didn’t take it seriously, until a utility pole crashed down where I’d been standing moments earlier.

The second text said: “Don’t deliver this order.”

The warehouse I was headed to caught fire that night.

The third text said: “Stop investigating. It won’t do you any good.”

I was already investigating.

I didn’t know who was texting me, why they were helping me, or how they knew about those things.

I only knew one thing:

Someone in this city was watching me from the shadows.

And every text I received was dragging me into a whirlpool deeper than death itself.
