The story of Nvwa takes place in the Danan Mountains in the south of Yu County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province.
The heroine Shanwa was originally the daughter of a military couple. Not long after Shanba was born, the couple was discharged from the hospital and on their way back to the army. Shanba went into shock and was mistaken by the young parents for the death of the child. She was helplessly abandoned in a cave near the 'Chadao'. Veteran Liu Jinhu was guarding the forest there at the time. When he was patrolling the mountain with his pet dog "Shadan", it was Shadan who discovered the girl abandoned in the cave.
