I Just Said It Offhandedly, and Now the Class's Second-Ranker Works for Me

From campus to the city | Marriage of convenience | Married first, love later | Reunited after years apart

In front of the high school honor roll, I patted Ji Lin, the perennial runner-up, on the shoulder and said, “One day, you'll work for me.”

Years later, after my father was in a car accident, I dropped out and disappeared. When I went looking for a job, I ran into him. He was already a rising star in tech.

He slid a marriage agreement across the table. “I need a wife.”

Only later did I learn that his company was called “Meet Lin,” a play on searching for someone, and meeting them in time.

He had kept the “Employment Notice” I wrote for him when I was sixteen. Beside it, he had written: “Still haven't found her.”
