The Northern Expedition was divided into two wars, both of which achieved important results. In 1926, the first Northern Expedition was officially launched under the cooperation of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. The 100,000-strong National Revolutionary Army took the Ye Ting Independent Regiment as the backbone of Communist Party members and Communist Youth League members as the vanguard. It adopted a strategy of concentrating its forces to defeat them one by one. It took only 10 months to defeat the two major warlords Wu Peifu and Sun Chuanfang, and pushed the revolutionary forces from the Pearl River Basin to the Yangtze River Basin. In 1928, the Second Northern Expedition united Feng Yuxiang, Yan Xishan and other troops to attack Zhang Zuolin and defeated the remnants of Beiyang. In the same year, Zhang Xueliang announced the change of banner in Northeast China. The National Government achieved formal unification of the country, which dealt a heavy blow to the reactionary rule of imperialism and feudal warlords and accelerated the historical process of the Chinese revolution.
