Mom, you say that flesh on your palm and the back of your hand is all the same. So why did you give me a name that means welcoming my little brother?
When the family was struggling financially, you didn't hesitate to make me quit school so my brother could study. You say marriage has always been a matter of parental authority and matchmakers' arrangements, but then you turn around and tell my brother, "As long as it's someone you like, that's fine."
Daughters are no worse than sons. Daughters can understand how hard things are for you even better. But your hearts have always belonged to your son, and always will!
This story follows two girls, Xu Weichu and Lu Yixue. Xu Weichu, an excellent student, sees her life of hardship begin after her parents tell her, "You're the older sister. Your brother is still young. You can't let his future be ruined." Not long after she leaves home, her parents coldly marry her off to her cousin. They all say he's handsome, talented, and honest, but soon after the wedding, his true nature emerges, leaving Xu Weichu to endure endless pain and mistreatment. Years later, when she returns home, her family finally says with regret, "If only we'd let you marry the person you loved."
After years of hurt and suffering, all Xu Weichu gets is a breezy "if only we'd known." To her, it's nothing but a deeply ironic remark. The regrets and sorrow of her entire life are trapped in those words.
Unlike Xu Weichu, Lu Yixue refuses to let her parents dictate her marriage. She throws caution to the wind and goes after the person she loves. Unfortunately, youthful love can never stand up to the fickleness of people's hearts. After her husband betrays her, Lu Yixue chooses to leave. She thinks she can find happiness again, but the pressure and mockery from her family become the final straw...
