Chen Chen was an ordinary delivery courier. One moment he was asleep; the next, he had become Cheng Xi'ao, a hugely popular female star, wearing a designer gown and towering twelve-centimeter heels on the stage of a singing competition watched by tens of thousands on a livestream.
And so the Chinese music scene welcomed a “suddenly awakened” songwriting diva. She played guitar barefoot and became a legend with “The Wind Rises.” She sat with children at an orphanage to help them write songs, turning lyrics no one had noticed into hit songs that moved the entire internet to tears.
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, the real superstar was riding a beat-up electric scooter through the streets every day, pushed to the brink of collapse by delivery orders.
“Do you know what I went through today?”
“You've worked hard. You're only 455 points short. Keep it up.”
This is a story about two people living each other's lives.
