Rule Horror: The Old Play in the Cabinet

One day, you receive a text telling you to retrieve a keepsake from an abandoned building.

You go. You push open the door. There is only an old-fashioned safe in the room, its door left slightly ajar.

Then a line of text appears on your phone screen:

“Rule One: You are an audience member, not a volunteer. Do not take part in any performance.”

This is no prank. The performance has already begun. And from the moment you stepped into the room, you were seated in the audience.

Those who follow the rules will never make it out of that corridor.

Those who break them will find a top hat in their own home that doesn’t belong to them.

Someone disappeared in 1923. Someone saw another self in the mirror. Someone signed a compensation agreement and never woke up again.

The magician stands onstage. The buzz saw is already roaring.

He says, “Please take your seats.”

He says, “The show won’t take long.”

He says, “I’m just a storyteller.”

Don’t believe him.

The rules are alive.

You only have ten chances to make a mistake.
