The story takes place in Linjiang, a coastal new first-tier city. The protagonist, Xu Zhixing, is a trainee lawyer who has just started working at Mingheng Law Firm. The firm is handling a case that appears to be a contract dispute over the redevelopment of an old factory district, but it soon leads to a chain of disputes involving Yuanzhou Group, Henglan Real Estate, the Yunqi Apartments project, an inheritance arrangement structured like a family trust, nominee shareholding between spouses, financing guarantees, personal information leaks, and liability for a construction accident.
