Erasing All Traces

This is the story of people destined to be “untraceable in the records” A shaman carves the name of a fallen comrade into animal hide. A coachman hears his master’s final half-sentence as his ribs are crushed. A Qin soldier carries his friend, whose leg has been severed, thirty miles through the snow. A county clerk spends thirty years waiting to say, “I bet right.” The crack of a heated tortoise shell, the faint sound of footprints being buried by snow, the hum of a bone snapping in someone’s hand: these are the sounds that official histories will never record. In the margins, they carve names, claiming a place for those who never came back. From the Shang and Zhou dynasties to the Three Kingdoms. They do not overturn history; they carve names into its hidden side.
