A zombie virus outbreak has plunged Barcelona into silence. Chinese exchange student Chen Minggui clutches his phone with its shattered screen. The last message remains forever frozen on the screen: "We'll be waiting for you at home." With no weapons and no supplies, he sets out alone on a journey of thousands of miles. He sleeps one night beneath the stained glass of the Sagrada Familia, carves his route into the ruins of the Eiffel Tower, and finds half a bag of moldy bread in the bell tower of Cologne Cathedral... Winter turns to spring, and time flies. After eleven years on the road, through Siberian blizzards, the Middle Eastern sun, deadly zombie hordes, and unpredictable human violence, he has gone from a young man to middle age. At last, he stands before the door to his hometown. He opens it. The lights are still on inside. His parents' hair has turned white, and three place settings are laid out on the table. His lips tremble. "Dad, Mom, I'm home." The light of day falls away, radiance seeps through, the mundane world is an illusion, and decay consumes the will. This world lies in ruins. Only the longing for home remains.
I'm a huge fan of zombie apocalypse movies, games, and novels. At last, I've decided to write a zombie apocalypse story of my own. No System, no supernatural powers, no golden finger. Just an ordinary person's journey home through the apocalypse.
