Emergency Night Shift: Please Stop Waking the Department Director

As soon as I started working in the hospital emergency department, I was forced to bind with the [Life-and-Death Warning System].

All I have to do is glance at a patient to learn the precise cause of their impending death and how long they have left.

To keep patients from dying on my watch, I have no choice but to become the hospital’s surgical chiefs’ “midnight death knell”!

“Chief Gao, stop sleeping! The patient with stomach pain you saw this afternoon has an aortic dissection that’ll rupture in twenty minutes!”

“Chief Qin, get out of the shower! That old man who says he’s drunk has an aneurysm in his brain that’s about to take off!”

By day, I’m an obscure, lowly resident who can never finish writing medical charts;

By night, one phone call from me sends the hospital’s senior department chiefs charging barefoot to the operating room as the “night-shift judge of the dead.”

Faced with relentless bullying from the deputy chief and sneers from my competitors, I diagnose a collapsed lung by touch in an elevator, reverse poisoning with a fifty-cent bottle of ordinary injectable solution, and leave a whole room of authoritative experts reeling like they’ve all got concussions!

Tonight, my night shift is starting again at midnight.

Department chiefs, are your phones fully charged, with the volume turned all the way up?

Come on in and see what it means when “the King of Hell orders you dead by three, but Jie Du drags the chief up in the middle of the night to weld the ICU doors shut!”
