Before going to bed, Lingbao read a novel called The Great Villain Becomes the Bright Emperor. In it, the villain endured hardships early on, then rose to power and became an emperor. One minor character in the story was a maid named Lingbao, who served a marquis's daughter after the daughter broke off her engagement to the villain, the Third Prince.
Curious about the character who shared her name, Lingbao wanted to find out how the maid's story ended. She never expected the girl to die before the third chapter.
The maid had tried to save her mistress, but fell into a lake herself. The lake had frozen over in winter, though the ice was thin, and the water was bitterly cold. By the time the others fetched a rope and called over an old woman who could swim, the maid had already stopped breathing.
The maid had been bought out of kindness by the nurse who served the young lady. Now that she had died for her mistress, the young lady was grateful for her sacrifice. She wrote to the maid's parents in the countryside, asking them to come and claim the body for burial, and offered them money for the funeral. But the farming couple didn't take a single coin. They simply wept as they brought their daughter home to bury her.
Before Xuan Lin was assigned to serve as a guard to the Third Prince, he had briefly crossed paths on a mission with Lingbao, who was only ten years old at the time. He never expected that the next time he saw her would be as she fell into the lake while trying to save her mistress. She was on the verge of dying, and though he was frantic to help, he couldn't rush to her rescue without the Third Prince's orders.
Now Lingbao had transmigrated into the body of this unlucky maid who hadn't even survived three chapters.
Lingbao: Since I'm already here, staying alive comes first. My top priority is to get rid of this damned maid status.
In this rigidly stratified society, Lingbao has three goals: stay alive, find her footing, and rise from servant to master.
