She's Been No One's Pawn for Years

*This story is set in a fictional world. All organizations, places, and events are imaginary.

Lin Jianwei, code-named “Wei,” is eighteen years old and has never failed a mission.

Her organization sends her to Aili Academy to steal an encrypted file. Deadline: three days.

She plans everything out: pose as an unremarkable transfer student, avoid the cameras, get close to the target, take the file, and disappear. Easy as finishing a workbook.

The school bully in the back row seems to be looking at her strangely? No problem. She can look at him, too.

The heiress in the front row has inexplicably taken against her? No problem. She needs to get close to the heiress’s uncle anyway.

And then there’s a girl named Su Nian who keeps leaving breakfast on her desk, saying she’s too thin. That part wasn’t in the plan, but she can live with it.

What finally stops her is an old photograph in the mission target’s study.

Someone in the photo is connected to her father, who died long ago.

The organization she serves may be the real culprit behind her parents’ deaths.

Her younger sister, missing for years, is still somewhere in this world, waiting for her.

Lin Jianwei closes her laptop, erases her tracks, completes the mission on time, and reports back to the organization. Every move she makes is as perfect as planned.

But from that moment on, her plans change.

She decides to remain undercover. At school, she’s the transfer student no one notices. In the organization, she’s her adoptive father’s sharpest blade. In secret, she starts investigating her parents’ deaths and searching for every clue about her sister.

Right under the noses of those watching her, she’ll find the answers she wants. She’ll show those who think they control everything that she is no pawn.
