Synopsis

In the chaotic years of the Republic of China, Xu Fangqing of Peach Blossom Village and Li Xiaoming, a fisherman, had known and loved each other since childhood. Their feelings were mutual, and with her uncle’s help, they became engaged, believing they would spend their lives together in peace. But fate had other plans: Fangqing’s uncle suddenly died, and her greedy mother-in-law secretly seized the family’s savings. For money, the mother-in-law joined forces with relatives and cruelly sold Fangqing’s husband, who was expecting a child with her, to a wealthy young woman in town as her live-in son-in-law. The ill-fated couple were torn apart by force. Fang’er was left alone, enduring hardship with their newborn in her arms. Forced to become a live-in son-in-law, Li Xiaoming lived among the wealthy, tormented day and night by thoughts of his wife and child. Meanwhile, the rich Yang Huamei had initially been infatuated with Xiaoming’s looks, but once the novelty wore off, she quickly fell for someone else, developing feelings for her visiting cousin. A haven of tenderness becomes a cage, and true love cannot withstand greed and fickleness. Manipulated, betrayed, and let down, their fates become inextricably entwined. Can Xiaoming escape his confinement and return to his wife and child? How will Fangqing survive alone in such difficult times? This story is rife with love and hate, laying bare the helplessness and sorrow of ordinary men and women in the old days.
