Gu Zhaoning’s gambling-addicted father sold her to the Pei household for five hundred taels of silver, to bring good fortune to the family.
The Pei family had served the imperial court for three generations. Their eldest legitimate son, Pei Heng, held immense power and was known as “Pei the Hades.”
She had no wedding ceremony, no official status, and no place in the family register.
The matriarch looked down on her lowly birth, the concubines mocked her as a good-luck charm, and even the servants dared to show their contempt to her face.
Pei Heng occasionally glanced at her, his gaze cold and indifferent, as if she were some dispensable object.
She endured it for three years, living like the lowliest shadow in the Pei household.
Then someone pushed her into an icy lake. When she woke up, she remembered nothing.
Looking at the maid sitting by her bed, her first words were: “Whose house is this? It’s pretty shabby.”
Her second words were: “Where’s my husband? Tell him to come see me.”
Then she wrapped herself in a quilt and barged into the front hall, addressing the roomful of advisors:
“Everyone out. I need to talk to my husband.”
Pei Heng: ?
She ordered him to pour tea, and he did. She said it was too hot, and he blew on it. She said the soup was cold, and he warmed it up.
The whole capital was abuzz: Pei the Hades had been wrapped around the finger of a village girl he’d married for good luck.
Later, her memories returned.
She stopped calling him “husband” and started calling him “Lord Pei.”
Hearing her call him “my lord” made him go cold all over.
She handed him divorce papers with a faint smile.
He tore them up, his hands trembling.
She said, “Lord Pei, take care.”
Pei Heng clutched her wrist, his eyes red-rimmed. “Where are you going?”
“Back to where I belong.”
“Where you belong is here.”
The writing is good and the logical thinking is very clear. At first I thought it was a time-traveling girl, but later I found out it wasn't. However, after he fell into the water and lost his memory, his personality was far different from before. If he had this kind of personality before, he probably wouldn't have been bullied so badly. The male protagonist's affection for the female protagonist is also inexplicable, but the relationship between the female protagonist and the male protagonist is quite clear. Some descriptions are too repetitive. But the overall story is still good.
