Protagonist: Lin Xiaoman, 28, a former operations worker at a major tech company, now a working magical girl. Burdened by a mortgage and kept alive by milk tea, she's good at translating "love and justice" into "hourly wages and performance reviews."
Synopsis:
Three years ago, on the verge of dying from overwork, Lin Xiaoman was chosen for the "Magical Girl Reemployment Assistance Program" and signed a five-year labor dispatch contract. The contract stipulates that slaying monsters earns commission, damaging public property means paying compensation, exceeding her transformation time costs her performance points, and a yearly rating below C gets her laid off. She can only stay transformed for three minutes, and her weapon is a Star and Moon Wand, though swinging it looks more like waving a glow stick. Every day after work, she has to ask the milk tea shop manager for time off, then rush off in high heels to fight the evil organization "Dark Abyss" over territory. The magical girls who signed contracts alongside her either switched careers to livestream sales or married villain executives and retired early. She's the only honest one still grinding away at her KPIs.
Then one day, a post-2000s intern who called herself a "dark magical girl" showed up at her door. The young woman wore a black dress, black wings, and black eyeshadow. She opened with a proposal to upend the industry: "Sis, you earn fifty in monster-slaying commission, but wrecking one curb costs three hundred. That's not justice, that's paying to work. Let's team up, acquire Dark Abyss, and turn it into a themed escape room. Monsters can be NPCs, wands can be props, and tickets can sell for 188 each. We'd make way more than we do fighting."
Lin Xiaoman was about to refuse, but the other woman handed her a business plan. The first page read: "Projected revenue of eight million in the first year. All magical girls will receive five types of social insurance and a housing fund."
She was silent for three seconds, then pulled out her stamped contract.
