Shen Tinglan inherits an unnamed, dilapidated temple left behind by her grandmother.
Just how run-down is it?
The roof beams leak.
The paint is peeling off the statues.
There are only two coins in the donation box.
The debt comes to 186,400 yuan.
And a developer is about to demolish the place by force.
Shen Tinglan was planning to sell the temple and run, but a sledgehammer from the developer wakes the God of Wealth inside.
The God of Wealth's first words after waking aren't a miracle. They're a string of curses:
“Who dares damage my divine statue? He's finished! His wife is cheating on him, his son isn't his, and there's a thirty-million-yuan hole in his company's accounts!”
From that day on, Shen Tinglan realizes there's more to this ruined temple than meets the eye.
Three gods are enshrined there:
The God of Wealth, Jin Mantang.
The Matchmaker, Hong Luan.
The City God, Xie Wujiao.
Their incense offerings have ceased for many years. Their divine ranks are incomplete, and their powers greatly diminished.
To reclaim their places among the gods, they need Shen Tinglan to run the temple and rekindle the incense offerings.
Shen Tinglan needs their help to make money and repay her debts, investigate her grandmother's death, read the ties of cause and effect, determine people's fates, and break evil schemes.
And so, one woman and three gods begin a relationship in which they look down on one another even as they help each other thrive.
On the surface, Shen Tinglan is running a dilapidated temple.
In truth, she is gradually restoring the worship of the righteous gods of the mortal world and exposing a conspiracy that the Daoist Association and the evil god cult have concealed for years.
