This play tells the story of the growth and enlightenment process of Wang Shouren (Wang Yangming), a great Confucian in the Ming Dynasty. When he was born, he had an auspicious vision of an immortal delivering his son. He didn't speak for a long time when he was a child, and he only spoke after he changed his name to Shouren. He was extremely intelligent at a young age, and he set his ambition to study and learn from sages. He dabbled in riding and archery, poetry, Buddhism and Taoism. After his marriage, he paid homage to famous teachers to study Confucianism. He tried studying bamboo but found nothing. After entering the court as an official, Wang Shouren spoke out and dared to remonstrate, but was persecuted by the eunuch Liu Jin. He went through the imperial staff, prison and pursuit, and narrowly escaped death. After being demoted to Longchang, Guizhou, he lived in a cave and faced hardships. Finally, he had an epiphany in the face of adversity, founded Yangming Mind Theory, and completed the transformation of his thoughts.
